My son has bought a little old beater car to run errands in etc. and wants to just get liability insurance on it as he only gave $800. 00 for it, he thinks you do not have a deductible when you only carry liability, I told him I thought you still would have a deductible, who is right or is every state different on that?

  1. To the best of my knowledge, there would be no deductible for liability and bodily injury.  Deductibles are only on the physical damage of your own vehicle, which he doesn't need on on $800 car, not financed!

  2. The liability coverage on a personal automobile does not have a deductible. Some business policies have liability deductibles but not personal auto policies.

By the way your son should buy more coverage than the state minimum. Most state minimum are too low. He should buy a policy with liability limits of at least $100,000/$300,000.00/$100,000.

  3. Every state has different minimum required limits. Liability coverage pays out in two way Bodily Injury (for any injuries your son causes to others if he's found at fault in an accident) and Property Damage (for any damage to others property your son causes if he is found at fault in an accident) neither of these coverages carry a deductible just a maximum limit that will be paid out per person or per occurrence. Some states also include Uninsured and underinsured coverages as a requirement these coverage would pay out to your son if someone hit him and did not have any insurance or enough insurance for his injuries or property damage and the property damage portion of this sometimes carries a deductible. If you google your state's insurance bureau or dmv you can get the specific requirements.

    I hope this helps.
