Demi tasse

By C.S.Scotkin

Grama, I like that that little cup.

Can I have juice in it, please?

It’s “may I” and no, that’s my

demi tasse set, Grampa gave it to me.

Grama, what’s a demi tasse?

It’s French, it means a little cup.

And your finger prints are messy…

I'll teach you to clean it up.

Every Saturday brought me a dime.

We talked of china, dinosaurs.

whale’s teeth, and time

Setting tables, periodic tables,

why I hated boys.

We talked about kites,

how to cheat playing gin.

About the state the country was in.

It was on the sideboard all my growing years.

Grama died, I washed it with my tears.

One day a package came, took away my fears.

A note in the little cup, written in her hand,

“for you, as promised.”

I will teach my granddaughter to wash fine china.
