  1. Filing cabinet, but not too organized on the inside of it.  One thing I have found helpful is an "action file"  just use a mail organizer and label things like:  To be paid, To be mailed, To be filed, ect.

  2. I started out with a shoebox for receipts, which works well to "hold" them, but not for keeping them organized, of course.  Now, I still use a shoebox, but inside I have "legal" size envelopes labeled by month (and year, although, I start a new box for each year).  One envelope per month is used for my own personal purchases, and the other is for "shared" items (groceries, household, etc) since I am now sharing rent with my mom, and my bf.  I pay for these items, typically, and mark the top of the receipts (in the event my mom or bf paid) before filing them.  Then at the beginning of each month, I add up, and figure out, how much each of us owes.  I also use an accordian style filing box to file other items, such as health insurance explanation of benefits, utility bills, etc. for the year.  At the end of the year, or at tax time, this system has helped me to sort out what I need and then it all gets "filed" (dumped) into a bankers box (cardboard file box with lid), labeled and filed in the basement or garage for the required number of years.  It's not too complicated.  I guess the hard part is filing those items that are important to find regardless of the year, such as life insurance policies, purchase warranties, etc. as you will want to have them in one spot and not buried in the year you made the purchase, etc. just in case you are like me and may not remember the year quickly.  Hope this answers your question.
