Do you have a more or less favorable view of China after the Olympics? Why?

I realize that China was hoping to show the world how "first class" they were, and I admit that they have done a remarkable job with their facilities, however, the Olympics in China has, in my opinion only served to show the extreme ignorance of this nation obsessed with image.

  1. China has spent alot of money and effort to host these games, and I think they have done an amazing job. They've really trained hard with their athletes and MOST of their gold medals are well deserved. Aside from the whole gymanstics-age controversy, I think they deserve some credit for hosting one of the best Olympic Games ever.

  2. I've been impressed by the people, not by the government.  The government is holding its own people back.

And although seeing the Wall is so beautiful, and watching the hospitality of the citizens, in the back of my mind I will also remember how the Communist government intimidates its own people, imprisons them for freedom of speech, forbids open iinternet access, pushes for one-child families and still favors the killing of baby girls because boys are more favorable..

Again, it's not the Chinese, it's their government I am leary about.

  3. The industry in which I work has a lot of dealings with the Chinese.  The Chinese government causes a lot of problems with our customers for certain things.  I won't get into specifics, but let's just say they aren't exactly fans of free speech and allowing their citizens to read certain books.  As such, I have no respect for their government.  However, I am impressed with this olympics.

  4. SARAAA

why are you so stupid? ur making us americans look bad

  5. Less, two US citizens died there in the course of one week. The Olympics will not help China, the only thing that will help them is capitalism. the way i see it they are just putting on this act, the citizens of china have been practicing how they will act during these two weeks for 7 years so they would look good. it's all an act.

  6. The people are very respectful, and humble.  The government gets kudos for only allowing one deranged psycho to kill someone.  It seems the host nation has been very hospitable to everyone, and I'm sure everyone had a great time over there.  My main concern is the legality of the participants from the Chinese delegation, and did they knowingly break the rules in order to gain an unfair advantage?  If so, they should be stripped of any team medals earned using those players, and allow the legal participants to keep any individual medals they may have earned.  I like China, and Chinese people, my views about them haven't changed.

  7. less

those show offs are trying to get attention. so what is the Olympic is in China? the opening is suppose to talk about the Olympics not china. and they try to show off.

  8. I stays the same.  Because I already know more about China and Chinese people than most of you.  Your perceptions of a country and its people are only through the lense of the media that are projected to you by various bias (pro-China, Anti-China...etc).  If you really want to know the true China, then you should visit it yourself and try to live there and experience it.

China might be obssessed with image, then the media and you people might be overly obssessed in coverage on China is the past few years because of Olympic.  If you are examined under a microscope, then why wouldn't you try to do your best to project a good image.  Just look at Hollywood stars, aren't they the same thing?  So, if we stop examine China with all the spot lights, maybe they won't be so obssessed with "images".

  9. China can't help it...they copy the Western entertainment industry. Aesthetics and lip-synching...isn't that what the ideals of Western entertainment industry is?

I think it's sad that they have ignore their own culture and copy others.

[[Saraaa]] One person died not two. The mother is recuperating and it's in the hospital fine.

  10. You guys are hypocrites if you don't think US isn't obsessed with image. Look at Hollywood, were all the girls are skinny and hot, where in fact America has a big issue with overweight and obesity. People are also talking about how the Chinese government lies and deceit, but look at the US government who bombarded and attacked Iraqi and justifying it by claiming they had weapons of mass destruction. At the same time they totally ignoring and disrespected the UN (so pretty much the majority of the other countries) requests to not attack. After the attack where are the evidence of mass destruction. Zero non, just like the number of evidence that you have of China gymnast being underage, which is all speculations.  And then we have “Maskddingo” who thinks he understands they was China conducts business because he works with a few. He views Chinese handle business by only care about image. I'm sorry but you have no idea about Business and should learn a bit. Do you know why Enron and WorldCom went down? Their stocks were performing unbelievable for consecutive years and then one day they go bankrupt. And yes it was mostly Caucasian American running the business (not trying to be racist but trying to even out the playing grounds). Does a great company just collapse? No what happened was they hid their expense/ debts and a lot of other scandals to make there company look like it was well performing. At then end it couldn't hide the scandals anymore, and went down and affected a lot of companies. This isn't the only time, America Finance industry has a lot of troubles because of this. The problem is a bit with too much power in corps, and I'm educating Maskddingo to see that America companies do the exact same and probably better at hiding it. All these companies do this to make their company performance look good, hence increasing the stock value. The cause is capitalism. Judging a company based of performance of stock is not a Chinese creations. Most likely it’s western influence.

Now talk about sport integrity, where America also has a lot of problem. A lot of people are complaining about China cheating and what not with little or no proof, and totally ignoring the fact that America have also cheated in the past. America athletes have had their Olympic some medals have been taken away due to cheating in the past. Also you can judge countries professional sports to base their integrity of sports. America professional sports team has some of the biggest integrity issue; which causes me to think the Olympic team is 100% trustworthy. Some examples of bad integrity in US professional sports. We can look at steroid use in MLB, and ref scandal in NBA. Both are really big issues and had really damage the integrity of American pro sports.

China is far from perfect, but instead of keep bashing on another country it’s really best to look at the overall picture and think of ways to improve your own self before expecting another country to improve. Every country has a lot to work on. America is far from being the righteous nation that so many Americans are trying to claim. I don't hate China or America, I do think the two countries are the world powers and have the biggest influence on the rest of the world. Hence they should be the ones to correct themselves and be a better role model which neither is doing.

Oh and Maskddingo I do believe you that your company does try to work more on apperance , but I don't think its because it's run by Chinese. I do believe image of stock performance is more of a result of capitalism and the way America and now China business focus more on stock performance.

  11. Obsessed with image? How are they obsessed with image when you're hosting an event that will probably be hosted there for another hundreds of years to come. Think about it. It's a one in a life time thing for Beijing. Of course they would have to tidy up and be perfect for the guests. If the United States was hosting the Olympics. Then they would act like they're obsessed with image. Everybody wants a good impression when they host the Olympics. As to your question. I have the same view of China.

  12. The games are too local and small to see what is going on in China, so my opinion is about the same.

The government controls the population and information.  They have to, with 1.3 billion people, the next challenge will be to hold all the provinces together and not have a USSR style revolt and formation of new independent countries.

Look to the Muslim influence to start separation talk.

  13. My opinion is still the same. I don't like some of the things that the government does. But I still like Chinese people, Chinese culture, Chinese movies, etc.

I know how to distinguish between a country's "government" and everday "citizens."

I've always respected the Chinese. If anything though, these Olympics have proved to me just how competative they are and how many good athletes they have.

  14. I feel the same about China, they did a great job hosting ,but i think they hid more things than they showed.Like the fact that they covered the businesses that weren't olympic sponsers with huge white cloths, so they couldn't advertise.

  15. Well. I think the Chinese are so good at what they do. They did really good at organizing everything, I don't think that they complain as much as other people do.

  16. From what I see on TV they are people who welcome visitors. I do have a different vision of them now because you get to see lots of information on their culture.  Mary Carillo's report on the kites and on the yummy snacks were very good.  I don't understand why we would be thinking is yucky to eat scorpions or roaches when they have the same anatomy as us.  But it's just a different culture.  I do have a more favorable view of China now.

  17. My view of the government has never been favorable and remains that way.  I have more favorable view of the people, but that was always favorable.

  18. It's about what I expected. It confirmed a lot of suspicions I already had... I can tell you that much. The phrase 'No respect for the rules of fair play' come to mind. They also are completely obsessed with 'appearing' a certain way, rather than actually doing it. This all jives with my own experience at work. I work for a few very nice Chinese people. We are in e-commerce. I enjoy the job very much, they are pretty good employers,  but one thing bothers me about them: They are always more concerned with having the company 'appear' a certain way rather than 'doing' what needs to be done to actually 'BE' that way. It's nerve wracking sometimes when they would rather cut corners and bend rules to get things done in order to simple 'look like' things are under control. Simple appearance is good enough for them. It's hurt our company so they are slowly changing their ways. They  basically want to 'copy' everything from somebody else. When I got here the website was basically a cut & paste job, poached from other un-knowing sites. There is no originality or, creativity other than finding ways to get away with cutting corners.  I see a lot of analogies to the way the games are playing out.

It's all just been a big affirmation of what I already thought for me.

  19. still the same actually. i respected them going in and that has not changed, I enjoyed the Olympics

  20. The same. A sports competition isn't going to make me like or hate a country more. The government still kind of sucks either way. The people still rock either way. I will visit China in a few years to establish a true opinion on the nation.

    These olympics were okay.
