Do you have an akita?

Question

how are they with children and other dogs? (I know if I bring it up right it will be fine with them but has anyone had any bad experience/good?)

No, but I have read about them. They are very friendly.

Akitas can be nice if raised and bred properly. Akitas who are turn out to be great dogs. But I've met some who weren't raised or bred properly and had some problems with them. These dogs need experienced dog owners, and make sure you get from a reputable breeder. They tend to be a bit aloof with strangers and strange dogs. If you think you can raise and handle this dog properly, then go for it. But if not, then try a different dog breed.

I have a dog. It is half Akita and half black lab. She is SO good with children. Other dogs......NO!!!!! She is sweet as can be to people but she is very protective and does not think fond ably of dogs. She is so smart though and very good around kids.

they get big and scary and the one i watched used to runa t children when i walked him

I personally have never owned an Akita but I did have a friend who did - he was sweet, friendly but very intimidating because of his size - he weighed in at about 125lbs.  My friend lived on a farm so he had lots of room to run which he so needed.

My father in law has an Akita/Chow mix....she's great with the kids (8,5 and 1yo daughters).  Please don't think the breed is bad.  Inbreeding and puppy mills produce dogs with 'mental' issues.  After that, it's all about the owner and training.
