I had been a little skeptical about that until the late 1980's. I live in the midwest where we have some quakes, the New Madrid Fault. I lived next to a house where there was a dog and I had an 8 week old puppy.
3 minutes or so before the 4.5 or so quake, the other dog, a hound, started to howl, and I thought it was sick (it was old) and my puppy literally jumped up in my arms. I thought she was reacting to the other dog's howling. Just then I felt something and heard a roar, like a loud engine or something, but did not really realize it was a quake at first. I went inside a minute later and my Mom said, "Did you feel the earthquake"? A minute later radio and tv were talking about the quake. This was in St. Louis in 1987 or 1988. It was probably less than a 5 on the Richter scale. But the dogs reacted a full minute-3 minutes ahead of time.
