Do you have any advice for this Auslander before I search for a job here in Germany?

I live in Bayern, have my work permit, I just took a 6 month intensive Deutsch course, and I´m ready and willing to work-preferably in the restaurant industry as a waitress.

I was in hospital administration in the US, but enjoy waitressing better.

Any advice for me before I start today?

Don't let them tell you you need to work for three days without pay so they can see if you fit in. While working on try out is the usual, you need to get paid for it. Can you work the tap? Getting beers quickly from the tap, while giving out the correct amount and not too much foam is something your boss is going to really look for.

Tipping is NOT included in the price but it will also not be very much! People in Germany have no more extra money to spend, it is already too expensive.

Most of the time the people say if they pay cash, and you want to give them change (if it is a little amount of money you give them back) "Passt schon" it means you don`t need to give them the change.

If they pay with credit-card they often leave a little cash for the waitress on the table, we don`t have it that you can include the tip on the bill like in the US.

Don't listen too much at what the others replied here.

Tipping IS included in the price. But if the service was ok you normally round up or give some extra money.

But as the prices used to double when we changed from DM to € you can imagine that there aren't too many who really give a tip like 10 - 15%. By January 2001 many restaurants simply took the same price after currency change and only exchanged DM into € - and  1 DM were about 1.95 €.

I guess you have to take care of your looking, put low shoes not to get tired so schnel, keep your face with nice smile to get all the support form the people around you. and keep your nice funny quick answer on the tip of your tongue.then Good luck girl.

PS: do not show the people that your are waiting for the tips, in Germany they do not give a lot.

Tipping is not common in Germany. it's included in the price. Your boss should give you extra at the end of the night.
