Do you have any advice for travel to/in Jamaica?

I'll be travelling alone. Just need a short getaway. I'm going for a week to a small B&B on the beach near Negril. I want to get out and see/do local things, mostly in nature. I've heard some people say Jamaica is unsafe, while I've heard others say it's gotten much better over the past few years. Since I'm going to be alone, I wonder if there's any advice on the best way to get out and do things. I'm pretty laid back and friendly to just about anyone, so hiring a local to show me around wouldn't be a problem, and I'm not high maintenance...just want some true Jamaican culture and beach relaxation. eco stuff would be great...zip lines, hiking, whatever... Bring it on, I'm open to almost all suggestions. :)

  1. carry a lot of short sleeves cuz it going to be very very very HOT!!!!!

  2. The canopy zip-line is fantastic, its beautiful and a lot of fun, I also did lazy-river rafting which was nice and relaxing and a great way to spend the afternoon. Jamaica is spectacular, although Kingston is still quite dangerous. Just be aware of your surroundings, etc. Eat lots of jerk chicken, it's great! and have fun!

  3. As you stated, get a local ( with a car ) to show you around, but plan on spending $75-$100 daily fot that service & pay at the end of each day, NEVER in advance.

they will be EASY to find, in fact they'll find YOU ! Get to know them a bit, buld a trust...you'll be fine, its not that bad for tourists, but keep your "street smart cap " on, don't leave that at home !

  4. You can climb a waterfall, my sister has done it before in jamica. He only advice is enjoy yourself, and have a great time x

  5. I would go and be very careful. Of course, exercise caution like anywhere else. But I would have all my research done before I arrive. If I were you, I would do all my touring with a tour group. Some Jamaicans prey on Americans that are naive. On my way home, I met a young American couple at the airport who had a hellish experience with almost being robbed and harmed in MoBay, having to hide from attackers on a street to get away. I felt really bad for them. They were lured there because of their naievete.

Anyway, many Jamaican locals are friendly. Negril is beautiful, I just came back yesterday. But do know that Negril mostly is about country life and the beach. There are some restaurants, places to hear live music, and the famous lighthouse. Check out the Royal Palm Reserve and 7 miles beach.

I would recommend going outside of Negril to Dunn Loring Falls, Blue Mountain Tour, Appleton Rum tour also.
