My ex-coworker recently travelled to Recife, Brazil, and was literally "mobbed" by group of street kids there...she was horrified by the "surprising encounter". Do you have any experience with the street kids, too? Are they really that bad?

  1. I don't have personal experience.  But, since I see you haven't had any answers to your questions yet I'll answer based on what I've been hearing.  I've done a lot of research for an upcoming trip to Rio, so my answer relates more towards Rio than anywhere else.  However, some things would be true in other large cities, not just Rio.

Apparently the flavelas are more dangerous.  Thus, these are key areas you want to avoid, especially if you are alone or are not escorted by a local that you trust (and that can intimidate other locals).  The beaches at night, even though well-lighted, are also a dangerous place to go.  This includes the lighted boardwalk areas, even in front of hotels.  I've read too many horror stories about tourists being mugged in these public areas.  Even a typical city street in Copa isn't immune from petty thieves.

When I travel to Rio very soon I will also attempt to not dress as a tourist.  That will be rather difficult in some ways, unless I decide to buy a whole new wardrobe.  Socks w/ sandals are a definite giveaway, as are touristy-type t-shirts and other bright clothes.  Carrying a visible camera isn't recommended.  Carrying lots of cash is also discouraged.

In short, the petty crime is very real, especially if you are a visible target (alone, tourist) or if you are in a bad area.  I have read so many warnings to tourists and have also had a close friend experience a beach mugging in Rio.  So, I'm going to take my precautions... but am also not being too paranoid.  I will definitely strive to have fun.

By the way, from what understand, much of the petty crime does come from the younger population.  Some works in teams of 2 or more.  One will distract you and another grabs your wallet, purse or camera.  I've read that it's recommended that you carry your camera in a grocery bag (vs. a camera bag).  It is much less likely to be a target, etc.

Hopefully someone with real experience will answer your questions.  I've just done a lot of research and I read a lot of the same thing: be careful, especially in the touristy and/or larger cities.  Recife would definitely "fit the bill" re: this type of area.
