  1. I have been to Spain a few times, and absolutely love it. The is obviuosly so much to see and do, and any guide book can give you the highlights, however these are my personal observations/recommendations

    1. Madrid- Madrid is like a combination of New York and D.C, very much the financial and governmental hub of the country, with the associated businesses and buildings. it is easily walkable and has a very easy busing system, so don't spend too much money on cabs. Do see the Prado museum, walk through Puerto del Sol to Madrids version of Times Square, check out the Reina Sofia Museum, eat some food and watch some entertainers at Plaza Mayor and check out the Palacio Real. Tapas is a big thing in all of spain, so enjoy

    2. Depending on how you are traveling, if you can drive up to San Sebastion, do. It is a gorgeous, beach town, close to the Bilbao Museum and an hour from Pamplona, where they have the running of the bulls. I did the running of the Bulls in 2004, it is a lot of fun,but I was 31, and fit, so be careful. The running is usually the second week in July for about 7 days. If you get the chance, you can watch a bullfight there, but I felt it was barbaric

    3. Barcelona, in my opinion one of the best and most fun cities in Europe. A combination of San Fran and Paris. Lots of artists, entertainers, and beware, pick pockets. Great weather, lots of fun places to eat and drink and dance.  Walk along the Ramblas, an open mall of shops, artists and entertainers. See the Picasso Museum, See the Sagrada Familia cathedral, and if you have time Parc Guell.

    4. I took a side trip to the Ballearic Islands of Spain, which include Ibiza and Mallorca. Exclusive, expensive, lots of pretty people and nice clothes. Gorgeous sunsets. Party atmosphere.

  2. I´m from spain and i was in bilbao. it´s avery pretty place in the north of spain.. If you need more information about bilbao and hotels in bilbao you can see http://www.dimehoteles.com/hoteles-en-Bi... if you click in http://www.dimehoteles.com/Turismo-en-Bi... you have all information about.

    regards

  3. Sorry Ingrid, but Bilbao isn't in the south of Spain, like you wrote in the answer. Bilbao is north east, one hour from Sansebastian.

To see the real Spain, you should visit places like Madrid, Toledo, Salamanca, Granada. Lots of history, cheaper than Barcelona and very interesting. Comparing Madrid with NYC or DC, well, I've worked in Madrid, been to NYC and DC, I can only say, this comment is at all not true.

The south of Spain is the true Spain. Cordoba, Sevilla and Granada are great destinations. Imagine, you go out for a beer or a glas of wine which will cost you about 1.50Euro and you will get a small plate of Tapas for free. That is Granada with its Alhambra, one of the most beautiful sights in Europe.

But honestly, you should get yurself a guidebook, sit down and read about Spain, then pick the destinations you like to go. Because it always depends on what you like to do and see.

  4. It's a very large country, but I wouldn't say avoid anything. Do what you like, be wary of pickpockets. Great art history and architecture in Madrid/Barcelona. They are great cosmopolitan cities. The south gets very hot in the summer, you may want to avoid that. There are some beautiful green mountains in the north and northwest, if that interests you. And the beaches are great, but Spain is a cultural mecca, I recommend enjoying that part before beaches. The nightlife is amazing, also.

  5. Hi

I have fallen in love with Bilbao. It is quite a new travel destination in the south of Spain. It is a lot cooler in the north than on the south coast, a great relief in the month of august.

I have lived here for 10 years and find the place enchanting. The Guggenheim museum is fantastic and there are great beaches nearby.
