i have a dog about 4 years and i am the only person in the family who takes care of it and i also have two parrots one ringneck and a cockatiel for about 1 year!everything is fine with them!

i love pets and i am going to move out in about 2 years!

i want to adopt a small rabbit but i tried to convince my parents (especially my mom )but she told me that rabbits smell too bad and she doesnt want to make the house a zoo!

i told her that if she had a problem i would give the rabbit to a new family and she answer NO!!i told her that i am going to plave its cage in the garrage so she would not have any contact with it but she said NO!i dont know what to do to convince her!

in about 1 week from now i am going vacations with the family at my village and i will take care of one of the young rabbits of my grandmother and i am going to try to convince them that i am very responsible and try to make them love it!

if there is someone out there who can help me please answer the question!!!

  1. right well first of all if you are considering adopting a rabbit DO NOT keep it in a garage. they would get too hot in there and they need light!

and if you have a dog its not really a wise idea... dog might attack it.

finally rabbits dont smell at all, as long as they are cleaned out regulary and make sure that they clean their rear end as they can become lazy about it.. which could kill them! (due to fly strike). rabbbits are very social and love attention and meant to run around daily and are not supposed to be kept in a cage....

please think carefully before getting one...

i have 4 myself and they are really funny and cuddly but they are handful at times, they can get expensive if they have problems with their teeth....

  2. If the rabbit had to be kept in a cage in the garage all the time it would be better for the rabbit if you didn't adopt it.  However one other thing you could try telling her is rabbits can be taught to use a litter box.  Also I used to have pet rabbits and never noticed any smell.

  3. you seem to be a good candidate for a pet owner.  Responsible and loving.  Unfortunately your mother seems to have all the pets she can stand.  If you are moving in two years what will happen to the pets?  I wish I had some magic words for you but although your mom may not always do what you would like for her to do...she is still the mom.  Enjoy your pets and take good care of them.  Enjoy the rabbit at your grandmothers.   Good luck and wait a few months before asking again.   don

  4. 1. You can't keep a rabbit in a garage- the car fumes can cause liver damage and kill it.  They should be house pets.

    2. If you are moving out in 2 years, you really need to think about what will happen to bunny in 2 years.  They are hard to find housing with, they can be very destructive and most landlords don't allow them, even with a pet deposit.  They also will not be allowed in 99.9% of college dorms.

    3. Rabbits are very sensitive to change.  It really is cruel to get one and then 'give it to a new family' if it doesn't work out.

If you have thought about this, then read this site: http://www.rabbit.org/ for information and care.  Show your mom the FAQs and the House Rabbit 101 site.  It should give her a good understanding of what care a rabbit will require.

Add: Even if you will only put it in the garage at night, it can't be in there- it WILL die.  Car fumes hang around for a long time in a garage, which is an enclosed area.  Over time, the toxins build up in their system and your rabbit will die.  I hope you do realize how extremely difficult it will be for an 18 year old with no prior rental references to find anyplace that will allow even one bird or a dog at all, let alone 2 birds, a dog, and a rabbit!  Most rentals that allow pets restrict them to one or two.  You will have a very, very, very difficult time finding somewhere to take 4 pets.  I see a mass animal rehoming in your future if your parents won't keep and care for them until you can afford to buy your own home.
