This is before it was obvious that cigarettes were bad for people. This is for a project I'm working on.

  1.   Long age a brand of cigarettes called camels and advertised  does not irritate the throat, the story goes that he died of throat cancer he was a lifetime camel cigarette smoker. His heirs sued the company for false advertising and won. I hope this helps.

  2. In 1978 Jimmy Carter said that the Federal Government would continue its research "to make the smoking of tobacco even more safe than it is today."

That's really the only statement out there by a governmental official (he was President at the time).  Health officials and the government have always claimed tobacco is unhealthy.

As far back as 1527 it was recorded that tobacco is addictive, and in 1830 there was an organized anti-tobacco movement.  In 1898 the TN Supreme Court ruled cigarettes were detrimental to health.  Unfortunately there's a long history of known health effects from tobacco and it's never been touted to promote well-being.

(Now marijuana is a totally different story...)
