What about a version of the game Taboo or Password? Give them scenarios where they have to manipulate the language to get their team to guess what they are trying to say (vocabulary terms, quotes from books, movies, tv,  or descriptions of people or things). You may have to invest the time to make the cards, but it'll be something you can use year after year.

Taboo Example: (the word) Apple pie

(cannot say): apple, pie, filling

(clues they CAN use): dessert, "All-American", sweet, cinnamon, crust, bake, etc...

Password Example: Baseball

Each team only gives one hint, teacher writes clues on board, first team to guess gets the point.
