  1. If you mean surveilance cameras, no- only in the parking lot area.  If you mean digital cameras, yes- we use them to take pictures of the kids for decorations in the classroom and documentation of skills for their portfolios.  Of course, we respect the parent's rights for their child to not be photographed for publications or promotions (such as flyers or on the website).  Parents fill out a waiver form asking about the use of photos of their child.

"Teaching" to 21 month-olds is different from the typical instruction of ABCs and 123s... mostly we deal in the social-emotional aspect of being a toddler.  We work on things like following directions, using utensils appropriately, sharing, turn-taking, touching others appropriately (no hitting), self help skills; learning how to pour from a pitcher, using a napkin to wipe the face, blowing noses, potty-training, etc.  We also work on language skills, cognitive skills and large motor skills such as running, jumping, riding a trike, and catching a ball.  Cognitive skills can include introducing the concepts of numbers (how many, take two), colors, and sounds, but without the formal instruction.

A good center will inform parents of "owies" that occur at school, and if any other incidents occur.  Ask what the policies are at the schools you are looking into, and if you want a school that has a camera going at all times, make sure that is asked of potential schools.  Not all schools do this.

  2. If you are a parent and you want a constant surveliance camera on, make sure you find that before you register.  They are not required to have constant camera surveliance.   Expecting to be informed of incidents in writing is a logical request as is being informed.  Yes, you should be doing educational activities with toddlers such as stories and educational games, (not classwork)

  3. My son went to a daycare that had cameras over the whole building.  When something happened they would write it up...depending on the severity they would inform me right away or at the end of the day when I picked him up.

At 21 months my son was learning at his daycare.  He knew colors and shapes and letters and numbers.  When he was 2 1/2 he had memorized words on cards.
