  1. I haven't go t a good ideas..but.....angry ideas

  2. What I've done in the past which is really fun (with people or alone) is set up cones or barrels or both in a haphazard way all over the arena and make up a certain pattern in your head. Be specific like through this part you have to canter, this part you have to back up in this direction and add hard factors like being in the correct lead, etc. If you're with people, have them make up a pattern for you! It's pretty challenging, fun and helps train you and your horse!

  3. Hey Redneck - you gotta be fun with a handle like that!

Lots of good info here - check out some books at the local Tractor supply store too or even Amazon.com.  There used to be a couple on games you could play on horseback and gymkhana events like are played at fun shows.

I caution you to keep it fun for the horse as well - your time spent with such a great friend should be used to benefit you both with learning and challenges.

Setting small goals and achieving them could be made an important part of these games - things like flexion and such could be built on the games.  Using cavaletti and cones could not only be fun for you and 1+ other riders, but could enhance your abilities with your horse.

I know a TON of gymkhana events like the ones the other gal listed - all are fun to take part in.

The ones I enjoyed as a kid were at the local fun shows with my ol' Three Bars gelding or my POA pony.  I loved things like the boot race where you each take off a boot, they get put in a pile at the end of the arena, you all ride down, get off, find your boot, put it on and the first one back across the line wins.  The pop race where we rode to the end of the arena, chugged a pop (soda) of our choice, got back on and rode back - first one across the line wins.  That one's kinda for young people with strong stomachs, though....  ;-)

But seriously - you could simply take a bunch of cones, cavaletti or simply 2x4s and place them on the ground then make a memory game - start out with a leader doing something simple - then everyone else has to do that thing and keep going with harder and harder things like side passing across a board or something.

Trail events are kinda neat too - setting up gates that have to be ridden through or mailboxes with paper or rain coats in them to put on successfully are all challenges that would help you and the horse learn together while also having fun.

  4. i like a cup full of water whoever has the most water left after diff. gates wins.  Also egg and a spoon. I don't think i would try a three legged race though, lol.

  5. Riding crop relay - gets a bit wild when there are 4 of you involved !

  6. horse ball!!

i love it. it is like netball but on horses. i used to play it on my old horse and it was amazing! all you need is a ball with handles on (they are quite cheap)  and a goal, it is a great to play with your Friends.

  7. put flags on barrels and run around the barrels trying to grab the flags...

another one is to have your friend stand at the opposide end of the ring on top of a barrel (but give PLENTY of room for your horse to go around the barrel)

then gallop/trot/whatever ur comfortable with to the barrel where your friend will hop on behind the saddle, and you race back towards where u started.

ALSO- set up a jumping course and plan it out with your friends. then, time each run through and add seconds for each pole knocked down. You will have a winner and its so much fun! we have horses jump over barrels and hay stacks and verticles and oxars, etc.!

    love these games =]

4.ribbon race (hold a ribbon between you and a friend and ride whatever pairs ribbon rips or falls last wins)

5.barrels ( ride barrel pattern fastest time wins)

6.poles (ride pole pattern fastest time wins)

  9. A good old game of 'tag' never went a miss! try putting up jumps as obstacles so you can run round them or jump them to get away from who ever is 'it'! me and my sisters also play a game where we build a course but keep the jumps down really small and then time each other round it to see who can do the best turns and be the fastest! you can then starting putting jumps up or changing things in the course etc etc! this is good cuz it gives you practise for jump offs as well as being great fun!!
