I grew up in a rural town on the island of Jamaica. I entered Grade 5 at the age of 10 in September 1979 at my primary school. In Jamaican primary schools there is only one teacher for the entire academic year. Mine was Ms Lawson, then 34 years old, about 5 ft 10 ins and of medium weight. She kept her cane of discipline hung over the blackboard. One morning I had forgotten my homework and got ten strokes of the cane in the palms of my hands. On another day I was caught chatting and got it on the thighs, but the usual site was the hands.

I turned 11 on January 1980 and began overeating copiously but never felt full. Soon I was truly obese with a gigantic belly which split open my shirts and hung two feet over my pants. One day during a Math test Ms Lawson caught me giving the answers to a girl and called us both up. She caned me on my belly and my back. She caned the girl on the hands. Another time I got five strokes on the belly and five on the hands for excessive talking.

  1. Yea when i was growing up in Japan, during school if you did anything bad < forget homework, talking out of line, etc.> the teacher would instill Konjo (a disciplinary process intended to instill in young boys a sense of strong spirit). In our school he would use a long bamboo sword and smack our backsides with them.

And actually Konjo is still practiced today in Japan but ya i agree because i think it does help the kids. It's taught us to be disciplined to our elders and I think it taught us about respect too.

  2. losers whose kids grow up to be useless drains on society dont want their precious spoiled brats touched, and they have the political clout to enforce that, so schools ahvce become useless prisons where children are not given the opportunity to learn academics or responsibility.

  3. Corporal punishment is still LEGAL in several states in the US. http://school.familyeducation.com/classr... I don't think it should be. Parents can be jailed for spanking their own children but school officials can spank other people's kids? That's insane.

  4. Not really. My dad always signed the papers that I weren't allowed to be spanked. Only by family members or close friends of the family. The one time I got spanked in school, it was 1st grade and my teacher felt that I stayed in the bathroom "too long", and spanked me for it. My dad raised all kinds of h**l about that.

I do think some kind of authority should be brought back into the schools. A lot of kids know there is no real authority. Suspension is a reward for them, because they are allowed to go home, watch tv, do as they please (at least a lot of them are). They just don't care.

  5. I think spanking should be up to the parents...if parents are okay with teachers hitting there kids then thats fine

  6. Holy cow..........that kind of punishment is not allowed in the U.S. and was not when I was in school ..........they were allowed to spank w/ parent permission, which I never got!

If someone laid a hand on my child ever............that'd be the last thing they'd ever do with those hands of theirs!!!!!! I'd have them cuffed tightly behind their backs and sent to jail!!!!!!

  7. Teachers should not have the right to spank.

    That's the parents job..

  8. The only time I remember it was when my mother came to the school and spanked me. I had gotten three cards pulled (for misbehaving) and got sent to the principals office. He called my mother, she came to the school, and took me to the restroom and spanked me big time.It was allowed in my school, but my mother and father signed papers prohibiting them from doing it. They didn't mind doing it if it was needed though lol

  9. I don't recall there ever being a case of corporal punishment in my school.  However, teachers WERE allowed to punish students and expel them. Today's discipline measures fall exceedingly short.

Your eating problem is likely unrelated to the canings.  It is actually a physical problem (brain? hormones? I don't know) that  can cause you never to feel full. It often appears near puberty.  Doctors can simulate that effect using drugs such as Prednisone (steroid).  You need medical attention, not constant focusing on a childhood event which wasn't all that bad in the scheme of things (try getting half your arm burned).

  10. i went to catholic school and still have vivid memories of the yardstick across my knuckles.

yes i think they should be able to spank kids in school, and at home. there would probably be a lot less troubles kids if they got a good spanking once and a while
