  1. No you just have to be competent and follow the program as outlined by the state.

  2. One important thing to remember is that many curricula for homeschoolers are written so that the parent monitors the child's progress (checking tests/quizzes) but the parent never actually teaches the material.

Finding a homeschooling group/co-op may also help you find appropriate curricula for your children, and the other parents can give you tips on what worked or didn't work for their children.   A co-op may also help your children learn something that would be impractical or impossible to teach at home.  Examples at our local co-op include a homeschooling father who taught basic electronics and woodshop, one mother who ran chemistry labs, and another mother who taught Spanish.

  3. No. From the New York State's Education Dept Q & A page on homeschooling,

"8. May a district require parents or tutors to produce credentials for home instruction?

No. State law does not require any specific credentials for the person(s) providing home instruction."

For more info on NY homeschooling law, go to the state website : http://www.emsc.nysed.gov/nonpub/homeins...

And look for other resources for NY at

    Good luck!!
