  1. yeah, you need to play alot of shows and make as many connections as you have.  thats what my attitude was, and my band has been getting pretty big and looking at alot of major record labels and turning down alot of major record labels.

  2. you dont have to be competitive, you can suck so badly that it hurts. what people like to hear is catchy music. so no you dont have to be competitive to be recognized

  3. you shouldn't play music to be recognized anyways so it doesnt matter. theres probably a little competition for musicians for fans(probably ends up in you selling out), depending on who.

  4. Hey Conair

You dont have to be competitive to be recognized because  music is not a competition. You have rap, latin, rock, metal, jazz, fusion etc....

What makes a good musican is being unique, having your own style of playing and a good sense of improvisation.

If you have a good product to sell, like Van Halen had with his finger-tapping (which he didn't invent by the way), or a good voice (another product) like Celine or Cristina Aquilera, Mariah Carey etc..., then you will be noticed and get recognition sooner or later.

Basically, it boils down to originality, a new concept like Maroon-5, or whatever. you think is new and unique. That's what makes a musician.

To be able to stand out and play a unique style to you, which automatically wil reveal you thorugh your playing.
