ok I know this may sound like a dumb question but I have no experience in fighting and I was curious to sign up in martial arts class, but I don't know that much about each style. I have 4 choices Jiu Jitsu, Kenpo, Tae kwon do, and MMA. But I'm curious which style is best to learn?, I think MMA brcause of different techniques. But I'm not really the atheletic type, and I'm short (I don't know if that matters or not :P)

  1. Umm no.

  2. you dont need anything but an extremely open mind and a very great willingness to learn exactly what is taught. mma is the best choice.

  3. Kenpo is the best system to start in. Find a REAL Kenpo school that teaches all phases of fighting and not a McDojo. JiuJitsu is a place everyone likes to start, but according to a favored grappling site, less than %20 of MMA fights since 2004 have been won by Brazilian Jiu Jitsu techniques. Kenpo incorporates Judo, Boxing Jiu Jitsu and a fluid way to transition. Frank Mir started in Kenpo and saved his face against Brock Lesner using a Kenpo Technique called sticky hands.

Look for a school endorsed by Frank Trejo.

  4. go with the MMA it will cross train you in different styles and combine them

i had almost no experience (2 months of boxing for weight loss not fighting) when i walked into my dojo

don't under estimate the short people

im not built like a rock, got a few pounds of excess body fat 5'8

and i grapple people who have height and weight on me

most my sparring partners have height or more muscle

    i chew threw people

theres one kid who 5'6 120 and he will take on someone whos almost 300 pounds, and his speed and intensity he will win

  5. Size has nothing to with martial arts, look at Bruce Lee 5'7'' or 5'8'', 140-150 lbs. He would destroy opponents that are like 100 lbs more then him. All thoughs are cool styles, just pick one and try to master it. I think for girls you should check out Wing Chun, it's chinese kung-fu, and it was actually designed for woman. It's a close hand combat using your opponents energy and short range strikes with your hands. There are kicks too but it emphasizes punches and chops.
