I have absolutely no experience but I am willing to train*

I want to get into my highschool team and try it out so they can train me and I can practice and practice and get good at it.

But do I li need to train in the summer and get good AND THEN try out for the highschool team or what?

I am confused - if I go to try outs do I need to show off my skills or just sign up for it?

I am a beginner and I have no skills so how would I make the team?

  1. If you just walk into the tryouts without doing any work, you will probably not make a team unless it is a bad team.

Buy a volleyball.  See if you can find a friend that knows volleyball that will work out with you.

Go to as many camps as you can afford time and money wise.

While coaches love players with your willing to learn attitude, they love players that can play some AND have that attitude.

  2. you should train before try-outs, that's for sure.

Try-outs is when you go to the school, gym.. (or wherever they are located), and the coaches watch everyone and see what everyone is capable of doing.  Depending on the amount of people that try-out, and the amount of people they need for the team, they will have to 'cut' people and not allowe them on the team.

So to answer your question: Yes, I would train first.. because, Yes, try-outs is a place where you should show off your skills.

  3. I saw  a 7th grader play on a varsity team.  But this school was really bad.  I knew the 7th grader and he played club.  But there was this other boy who tried out and he thought that he would make it, even though it was a bad team and he did not---so you should practice a lot!!!

  4. YES you do need training before you go to tryouts!! You just can't expect to go in with NO eperience and make the team unless they suck! I suggest go to as many camps that you can afford and have time for in the summer!! Yes it is good to have that attitude for volleyball but even if you were a natural at the sport you would still need practice and eperience!! So go to camps, talk to players who were on the team last year and see what the coaches for your school expect out of a player, and maybe you can even get togeather with a couple of the players that played last year and play a little of volleyball and they can help you out!!!

Good Luck on tryouts and I hope I was helpful

  5. If you're a freshman you could have a chance. I'm a freshman and there was this one girl who had never played before, and they stuck her on the team.

It may be okay if you start out with no skills but you have to have potential, and the work ethic. Also make sure they know your new, so they don't think you just suck.

  6. Unfortunately yes you should look into some sort of training and physical conditioning before tryouts. Most coaches are looking for the best players across 4 age groups o create a varsity team (freshmen through seniors). Experience is a plus because even if you are fast - if you can't pass a ball to target (the setter) or make a successful approach and hit or execute a block then you are at a disadvantge in today's game. With rally scoring in place and a point awarded on each play the more mistakes you make the more points the other team gets.

So following the a previous poster's advice see if you can find or buy a volleyball and a friend or a wall and start getting contacts in. Do some running in the summer to get in shape. See if the school provides a speed and weight camp. Check out local colleges and universities and see if they are offering any camps. You should also go talk with the school coach and see what they are looking for at tryouts. It won't be easy depending on the school but I wouldn't walk in without any knowledge or a little practice.

One thing to remember about volleyball - it's more athletic than it appears and is harder because few of the actions are normal for humans. Watch little kids with balls - they throw, bounce and kick them. In volleyball we rebound them to other players. Much more difficult to master initially.

  7. It totally depends on the school.  When I coached, no one was cut from the freshmen or JV team, but then we didn't have more than 15 or so people trying out for each team.  If you are tall and a good athlete, many schools would let you be on a JV team.  You have all summer though, so you should practice, go to a camp, join a summer volleyball league, go to open gyms, etc.

  8. Camp camp camp camp camp is a must!  This will be your best bet for making the team because you can attend as many as you want/can afford over the summer.  Talk to either the high school or the middle school coaches about camps, if they host one at your school or some they'd recommend.  You still have a very good possibility of making the team having no experience.  Erica Lott, a senior this year at BYU had never played volleyball and redshirted as a freshman, so there is always that possibility.  Now back to camps...

You should attend an individual camp which will go over the basics of volleyball.  They should go over skills (passing, setting, serving, hitting, blocking, defense) and rotations so you'll have some knowledge when you get there.

If you'd like more information on camps or some suggestions, let me know.
