Do you have to consult the police you are having a yard sale?

My sister told me that I have to do that in order to have a yard sale.Is it true or I can just go ahead and have a yard sale?

  1. You need to contact the city to get a permit.


  2. Such things are governed by local law such as city ordinances and are not universal.  

  3. You have to go to City Hall.  It may require a permit, Police have no reason to be bothered for that.  However, if there will be an issue with parking/traffic on that street because of the sale then the police may be required to stop your sale or require you have customers park elsewhere.  If it is a nuisance...you wil be cited and fined.

  4. Some cities do have an ordinance requiring a permit. Call the police department or city hall.
