  1. I don't believe so.  I'm in the US, and here you just need a passport.  You contact the embassy for any problems, like losing your passport while you are there, etc.  Otherwise, your passport is checked at the airport, you are given the country's version of a visa waiver, and off you go.

  2. No, usually you don't. But you might need to get a visa before going, so it's a good idea to look that up on the website of the embassy of the country you're traveling to. Which country are you from and where are you going to?

  3. If you're talking about contacting a US embassy or consulate when traveling abroad, no you don't have to. However, it's not a bad idea to register with the embassy, which can be done on-line. There's no legal requirement to do so, but it doesn't hurt, just in case. Things happen, both overseas and in the US, and either your folks might want to reach you, or something happens and it's advisable for Americans to leave, or whatever. If the embassy knows how to reach you, they will if it's necessary, or if everyone suddenly decides to get out of Dodge, you won't be playing Home Alone in your hotel.  Check out http://travel.state.gov/travel/tips/regi...
