Question:

Do you have to drink milk when you're pregnant?

I'm not allergic to milk or anything but I really don't like the taste of milk. Especially now that I'm pregnant, the taste and smell of milk makes me really nauseaus. I also tried to eat cereal with milk and it's not helping. I feel really sick after having milk. Is it really important to drink milk during pregnancy? Will I still have enough milk to breastfeed my baby if I don't drink milk?

Is there anything else I can do to subsitute the milk?

I'm 8 weeks pregnant today

  1. I also am not a big fan of milk, I have been drinking chocolate milk and so far I really like that.

  2. You do not have to drink milk.  As long as you are getting calcium and other nutrients through other dairy like cheese and yogurt, you will be fine.  Good luck and congrats!

  3. The only time that I drink milk ever is with Chocolate in it. While I was pregnant I ate alot of homemade milkshakes and things like that. I am not allergic to it either I just dont like it at all. As long as you are getting enough Calcium then don't worry. My little girl is 3.5 months old now and is headed for her age. Also drinking milk has nothing to do with breastfeeding. Your body makes that milk.

  4. A lot of people do not realize milk calcium is not as identical to bone calcium as people might think bone calcium is closer to shellfish calcium and there are dark green veggies with calcium too that are equally good(well washed, pesticides and preservatives are a no no).  Try to keep natural as you can prepackaged food for the most part is bad for babies.  Cheese and yogurt and other dairy products introduce fat which is good and major in breast milk too, please take pre-natal vitamins as no young woman gets all of the vitamins she needs, and well washed spinach is really good for Iron use it in a salad.

  5. drinking milk does not give/produce you breast milk. and i don't really drink milk either, i don't like the taste. while pregnant i normally drink more (cereal, or eating cake/chocolate with a glass) but i cant drink it alone. i can go weeks without even drinking a sip of milk. i would talk to your doctor and see is there anything else they can recommend. try eating cheeses and other dairy products, it should help

  6. No, you don't have to drink milk.  You just have to make sure you get a lot of calcium.  Dark green leafy vegetables are a good source of calcium.  You can also buy calcium fortified orange juice.  Ask your doctor about taking supplements.  The milk you produce won't have anything to do with the amount of milk you drink.  In fact, babies are really the only people who need milk.  Adults don't really need milk.

  7. Whole Milk is very good for you! But you really don't have to worry as long as you are taking Vitamins to make up for it. Good Luck and talk to your doctor!!

  8. You don't "have" to, although yes, it is better for you, that's why programs like WIC and other nutrition programs always give you a ton of milk. It's all about the calcium -- you don't drink milk and go directly to your b*****s with it to produce your own -- it's more because the baby steals all YOUR calcium in your bones & teeth and you both need a little more. You can chew Tums which could also help heartburn if you have it (if you're lucky they work, didn't for me!) and also eat more yogurt, cheeses, etc.

  9. The milk you breastfeed your baby with has nothing to do with drinking milk! That makes zero difference at all. But you do need some calcium-try getting it from yoghurt or other dairy products.

  10. i couldn't stand milk when i was pregnant with my first, however, i started to crave whipped cream lol!

My body must have lacked calcium!

    Try yogurt or yogurt drinks.

  11. If milk makes you sick then do not drink it. Milk is rich in calcium and that is why it is recommended that pregnant women drink so much milk. There are many other foods and drinks that are rich in calcium, like cheese, yogurt, fortified juices. You should discuss this with your health care provider, he/she may want you to take an extra calcium supplement in the place of drinking milk to ensure that you get a sufficient amount. Drinking milk doesn't have anything to do with your milk supple for your baby, but it is necessary that you drink plenty of fluids when you breastfeed.

  12. well youre still in the first trimester, so anything that you're not used to will make you sick... i am 17 weeks, and i never used to drink milk. but the other day i was cravin it! i had 3 glasses with my dinner. my hubby was laughing because he knows how much i hate drinking it (well pre-pregnancy)

  13. I think milk is sort of nasty too.

there's all sorts of foods you can eat that have calcium.  cheeses, tofu, salmon, almonds.  you can get orange juice with calcium even.

if you think you still don't get enough, ask your doctor if you can take a supplement.  there's also tums, which are great later on when your little bundle of joy rearranges everything (so it seems!) and you get heartburn just looking at food.  lol!

  14. milk wont affect your breastmilk as its not the same thing but its good to drink milk while pregnant , i dont think you have to but its good that you do, try a milkshake or milky cup of tea or mix fruit milk and ice cream into a blender that might help

  15. yogurt

    pudding

    cheese

  16. You don't have to drink milk but lots of fluids.  You don't see animals in nature drinking milk while nursing.  Just stick with water and other safe drinks.  Keep taking your prenatal too!  I've heard that if your baby has trouble sleeping or with gas you should cut out dairy first.

  17. It's the calcium you need, so you can substitute with things like yoghurt or a cheese sandwich.

It won't affect your breastmilk, but calcium is very important for the formation of your baby's skeleton.
