i know someone who i believe did his degree in zoology at Leeds University whilst working at a Zoo, i would imagine biology would be far more important

No, you have to get a degree in Zoology.  Many schools require that you take classes in Chemistry (especially) and Physics, because many physiological processes involve chemical reactions.  Also, Math and a foreign language are required for a Bachelor's Degree.
