  1. It depends on where you live--different states and provinces have different regulations.  Where I live, most places only require an "Early Childhood Education" certification ---generally taught at career colleges including CompuCollege and Community College and valid CPR. Check out requirements for job ads for more information, or contact your local regulating body.

  2. Well here in  Broward County the answer is neither. You can work in a preschool with a high school diploma. However, you are more likely to be hired (and receive higher pay) with some type of college education. Specifically, there is a certificate you can receive at the community colleges called a CDA (Child Development Associate). This requires 40 credit hours of specific college coursework in order to receive this certificate. It's less than an Associate's Degree which requires 60 credit hours but still requires some type of college credits.

  3. Depends on the preschool program and state regulations. I started teaching Head Start with nothing more than a love for children. Then all teachrs had to have an Associate Degree which I got from a community college. By 2011, teachers will be required to have 4 year degrees in Ohio to teach in a Head Start center.

West Virgina has a pre-K program that requires not only a four year degree in education, but a pre-K certification.

So this varies from program to program and state to state.

  4. You can work in a pre school with a few community college credits also.  ECE's.
