  1. Doing it on your own is difficult, but possible. However, unless you want to be mired in debt, and end up the co-pilot in the right seat of a regional jet, making $22k a year, trying to build time so you can move up to the big stuff, you better get your training in the military FOR FREE.  Then you can hopefully, come out with enough flight experience to be able to get a decent job, making at least enough money to live on, while you build time. And, if you stay in the military long enough, you can come out on the top.

Most of the military pilots do not fly "those crazy planes", so don't worry about that.

You will need to be an exceptional student, with very good grades and no serious medical issues, for the military to be willing to invest the money in you.

  2. No.  Military aviation is still an excellent way to go if you want to be hired by the airlines, but you can get your training through civilian methods as well.  Go to the nearest airport where flight training is available and talk it over with the flight instructors.  Tell them your goals and they will tell you the best route to follow.

In any case, you will need a 4-year college degree, so study hard and brush up your spelling and grammar.

  3. No, at least not in the US.  Plenty of us, including myself, fly/flew in the airlines with no military background at all.  These days, there are probably just as many airline pilots without military backgrounds as there are with.

  4. No. You need to learn how to fly, get an FAA license and several flight ratings. (commerical license, multi-engine and instrument ratings, second class medical --first if you're going to be a captain.)

It also helps if you learn to spell and do proper punctuation. "herd" for example is "heard" if properly spelled, questions are followed by a single question mark as opposed to seven, or zero question marks.
