  1. Not always. Most of the time, obit writing (for large papers) is a low-level job. Many papers now are taking family or funeral home submitted obits. It's a money maker.

    That's why so many obits in my town use euphemisms like, "went home to be with the Lord."


  2. Generally yes.  Obits in newspapers are generally written by someone employed by that newspaper, so by definition you need a "career" or job as a journalist.

    On the other hand, if you just wanna write one and post it somewhere, no, you don't need any credentials LOL.

  3. I always thought obituaries were written by the family.
