Question:

Do you have to have a high school diploma for financial aid?

I will not be getting my GED until August/September since I am still studying. I want to start college at my local community college, the deadline for financial aid is June 30th, and I would be starting classes around October 30th. My question is, can I apply for financial aid even though I do not currently have a diploma, but I will before I start school? I am a Texas Resident, if it matters.

  1. The June 30th deadline is for the 07-08 application and the application you need to do is the 08-09 application. The deadline for the 08-09 application is June 30th 2009. You should do your FAFSA now and when you get your GED, you can update your FAFSA to reflect this.

  2. No you just have to fill out the FASFA form. our school made us fill it out before we graduated high school in oklahoma.

  3. You have to have a GED or high school diploma by the time you receive the fin. aid.  You should complete the FAFSA NOW!!  And you should contact the financial aid office at the school you plan to attend to make them aware of your special situation.

Right now you are not actually receiving the aid, just applying for it.  As long as you will have your GED or diploma by the time you need the aid, you are fine.  Good luck!

  4. No. The people that go to college straight out of high school get their financial aid letters from the colleges they applied to as early as February of their senior year. So you can by all means apply for financial aid now.
