either way, by foot, or car, or plane, you need a passport to go in to mexico and to return the US.

This question sure pops up a lot!  Going into Mexico, you don't need to show any ID.  Coming back into the U.S. (walking or driving), you will need EITHER a passport OR your birth certificate plus some other form of legal ID, such as a driver's license.  As of June of next year, everyone will need to show a passport.
