I had to have one to fly into Canada but it was not necessary if you were driving. They kept changing the rules as to driving in. Check with your local travel agency to see if they have finally decided. It took me eight weeks to procure the passport but you can expedite it at a much larger charge. I also needed a birth certificate and other pictured ID in order to obtain.
