Do you have to have a passport to go to Mexico from the United States? What about Canada?

no you don't need a passport  yet.

june 2009 will be when you do need a passport

for now all you need is a picture id and birth certificate

you must have both.

Whatever... at this point, if you have one, it would protect you when you come back.  But don't lose it in Mexico, and keep in mind there are people who would kill for a current passport.  Put it in the Hotel Safe when you get there.

Yes, I believe you do now.  That is why there have been news reports in the past year of the wait for a passport being long.  I think it was instigated about a year ago.
