Do you have to have a passport to travel to southern ireland from england?

Reason for asking: I don't have a passport and i don't have a photo id driving license, just a normal paper one.

sorry if i've upset anyone for asking the question when it had been answered before, i must have been looking in the wrong place.

It's a difficult question because by law in the EU you don't need a passport to travel withn the EU but you must be able to identify yourself, so strictly seen since the UK doesn't have ID cards you must have a passport or some other acceptable ID with a photo.

You mean the Republic of Ireland. No such place as Southern Ireland, dear.

It's my understanding that if you're flying, you need a passport.

The first answer you received is correct.  But if you're flying from the UK to Ireland you will need some form of photo identification to be allowed to board the plane. A passport or driving license would do.

and no - you dont need a passport

there is a common travel area between the UK and ROI therefore you dont need a passport - however if you are traveling by plane you will need some form of photo id and a passport is handy for this

having worked  on the irish ferry,what you are requested to bring now is some form of photo id...not quite law yet...

UK citizens don't but take it anyway in case the law changes while you are on your way to the airport!
