  1. Yes, you need a passport now to go out of the country even to Canada and Mexico.  The only exceptions are places like Puerto Rico which is a U.S. Territory.

  2. I'm not sure why people insist on answering these questions if they don't know the facts or cannot back up their statements.

US nationals do NOT need a passport yet to enter Canada if they come by LAND or SEA. You only need one by AIR. The current deadline last announced for the passport requirements by LAND or SEA is June 2009.

Christine has it right and was first to answer correctly. I hope you give her the 10pts. Sonya also makes a good point. It only takes a few seconds to do a search for a similar question.

  3. Please do a search on this question as it has already been repeatedly asked. Specifically, there is a question that's the exact same as this one, only a few questions down from yours. The responses are top notch, so please search before you post questions as the same people answer these questions over and over and the responses get diluted as we get more tired of typing them out.

  4. THEY SAY yes you do need a passport

  5. If you drive in to Canada, you don't need a passport. However, next year that will change and you will need one after that point in time. As of right now, all you need is your drivers license and your birth certificate. If you fly then you will need a passport.

  6. The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative, a government plan to introduce passport use for travelers coming back from Canada, the Caribbean, and Mexico has caused a lot of confusion in the last few years, since they keep changing dates and requirements.

As it stands right now (May 2008), you'll need a passport if you're flying between the U.S. and Canada. However, if you're returning to the U.S. by car or boat, you can use either a passport or a photo I.D. plus proof of citizenship (a birth certificate, for instance).

Starting in June 2009, U.S. citizens will need a passport for sea or land ports of entry as well.

The U.S. Department of State keeps its Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative page updated, so it's the best place to check on the latest requirements:
