Do you have to have a passport yet to drive across us/mexico border.?

I know we had to have a passport to fly in last year. Now we are thinking of driving over to San Felipe for vaca this summer, some of our friends do not have passports. Is a certified birth certificate sufficient?

To drive to and from Mexico you need a photo I.d. and proof of citizenship...EITHER a passport OR a birth certificate.  See site below.

Unless they extend the deadline you will need as passport in June of next year to travel by all points sea, air and land.
