I want to know what the laws are when you drive a moped on the road

  1. Nope; no license or anything required, but you have to be16 if it doesn't have pedals, 15 if it does. The laws pertaining to bicycles on the road apply.


  2. The answer to your question depends on which state you reside in, or more aptly, which you operate the moped within.

    For example, the State of South Carolina first defines a "moped" as something motorized and with pedals that do not maintain the capability to exceed 20mph.  In that state, you do not have to obtain an operators license for a moped.

    Many confuse that definition of moped with some of the small scooters that are available for purchase today, which do not have pedals, definitely exceed 20 mph, and do require an operators license.

    It is best for you to search the webpage of the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) for the state you operate that "moped" within to see what the local law may be applicable for you.  If you want to write me offline, I will gladly assist your search.
