Do I have to include audio lecture in an online course? How common is this? What components do most online courses have? What are the must-haves for a quality online class?

  2. Great question!

That depends ... what are the course goals and objectives and, aside from needing audio because of a student's disability or other such requirement, you would only include audio if it adds value to the course.

Generally, the written word (electronically) replaces the spoken word in online courses -even when classes are being held in an asynchronous format (see web link below for more information -some good stuff) the majority of material in use -and for use- is often stored electronically for a 24/7 retrieval by students.

To help put a response to your question in some perspective it's good (I believe) to reflect on a few questions before constructing the syllabus and online format:

    (1) Is the course purposefully online -and in need of audio- because the subject matter must be dispersed to an audience over multiple geographical locales AND hearing the voice of the instructor is a critical component for the success and outcomes of the course?

    (2) What advantage does having an "audio" link in the online class provide for the learners?  Does that advantage supersede the advantages that come from storing text and narrative online.

    (3) If the audio need is not directly related to the expertise of the instructor and having to hear her/his voice, can it be met via links to web sites, videos, CDs, and the like?

    (4) Is the audio an adjunct to the other material contained on the website?  If so, does it have value for the learners that otherwise may not be attained without it?

    (5) Does the audio provide another venue or pathway to engage multiple learning preferences or styles and it's use is a means of the instructor ensuring that all learners have the same opportunity to learn the material regardless of the technology that delivers it?

I hope this information is helpful and, at a minimum, gives you some things to think about -and explore... good luck!
