You don't need to have insurance to bid on eBay. You can pay for insurance along with the shipping and payment if it's offered. Check the star rating to see if there is a lot of problem with their mailing. I use Paypal credit card to protect myself which fortunately, I was able to get refunds from flaky sellers.

Hi Kiya,

   No,  you don't have to get the insurance,  but if the seller ships the camera to you... and it winds up getting smashed during shipping or lost....  you will be out of luck.  No camera... and the seller does not have to refund your money either.    

   I suggest you be smart about an ebay purchase and protect yourself and your new camera.   Insurance should not cost more than $10.00 anyway.

That is the best advice you will get from anyone...
