  1. English (Lang. & Lit.) are a must, you should get at least a 'B' if you want to have a good, solid record. For universities, you need A-Levels. And a Language at A-Levels, including English, "might" help you. But don't take my word for it, email someone from any university and ask.

  2. No. GCSEs don't really matter.

You generally just have to have maths and English at A*-C grade.

  3. A Levels are more important, but as your provisional place at Uni will be given before you get your results, they will look at GCSE grades, and if you and another candidate are neck in neck for a place, having a language at GCSE can be a really good sign that you're a good learner. It's not vital, but I'd say it's a good thing to have. =]

  4. I think it gives you an "edge" but its mostly the core subjects (English, Maths and Science) which matter most. But obviously A Levels are more important.
