My daughter is in the ROTC and is a 1st Sergent. That is one of the schools she would like to apply for. If she joined the armed services would the GI bill pay for Anapolis? This is all so confusing.

  1. Check out http://www.usna.edu/Admissions/steps.htm for information on applying to Annapolis.

  2. There is no GI bill.  That was eliminated years ago.

  3. all the military academies are free, but you have to take a military contract afterwords.

  4. As a midshipman, your daughter would be a member of the armed forces, in this case, the US Navy. She would be under military law, not civilian law.

Annapolis is free. It is a service academy. It is extraordinarily difficult to get a place there because it is so highly thought of. The education and training are absolutely first class The degree they offer is an Engineering degree. It is extremely difficult, because in addition to working for this degree the midshipman also learns how to be an officer. The candidate has to be recommened by a member of congress..  There are special exceptions, notably, the children of Medal of Honor Winners are given special consideration.

The old GI Bill was replaced by a cheap version called the Montgomery GI Bill -- a disgracefully ungenerous program.
