I want to be an Ocean Engineer/Naval Architect and am wondering if I have to join the navy to design ships for them. Also is working for the Navy a good decision compared to working for companies?

  1. i dont think you can unless you have a spouse in the navy

but you shoul join anyways smartest thing youve everdone in your life.

  2. You can work directly for the navy or become a contractor doing work for the navy. Go to www.usajobs.gov and you can search all of the DOD jobs.

  3. Yes, you can work for the Navy without joining the Navy.

Some government-paid civilians work at naval bases, if they have special knowledge, as you would have if you were an Ocean Engineer/Naval Architect.

It's a good decision because the benefits are very good (great health care and retirement package), but these sorts of jobs pay less than comparable non-government jobs.  Naval bases occasionally get shut down, but so do privately-owned companies.

  4. I thought that u could work for the NAvy if u get a job with a company who has a contract with the DOD.
