  1. no its normally free

  2. yes. It's approx $12 per month for SERIUS or XM, who are going to merge, if the FCC gets their act together!

  3. Yes, both Sirius and XM (the only two satellite radio companies) charge $12.95 per month. However, you also have to buy new equipment specific to each company. For example, I have a subscription to Sirius and paid $100 for the receiver and $50 for the boombox, plus an "activation fee" of $15.

All told I spent $307.45 ($165 for the equipment and activation fee, plus $142.45 for the yearly subscription).

However, Sirius has other options for the budget conscious. They sell "dock-and-play" receivers for your car for $25.

That's about all I can tell you offhand. Keep in mind I bought all  of my equipment two-and-a-half years ago, and most of the pricing has gone down since then.

I should also mention I've never heard any of XM's programming or seen any of their prices, so you should check them out, too, before making any decisions.

In my opinion, satellite radio is well-worth the price: no commercials except for the "talk" channels, and no censorship. Your favorite music 24/7 without the annoying, endless commercial breaks.

Plus, if you subscribe to Sirius, you get Howard Stern in all of his raw and uncensored glory. The only bummer is the commercial breaks, but typically they're only 4 or 5 minutes long, compared to the interminable 15 minute breaks he was forced to take on terrestrial radio.

    Anyway, good luck.

  4. Yes, you either have to have commercials to fund a station or charge admission.

  5. I believe there is some minor charge for a subscription.
