  1. It depends.  If you're changing your last name because you got married, you'll generally only have to pay to get a new driver's license and passport.  The social security office, banks, most other accounts you have (credit cards, loans) will change it for free.

    If you're changing your last name because you don't like it, then yes, you'll probably have to pay extra money for that.

Yes, you do have to pay.  You will have to pay to be fingerprinted at your local police agency, probably $25.00, so they can run a criminal background check on you.  You will have to pay a filing fee when you petition the court for your name change, and that will run about $150.00.  Once your name is changed, you will have to pay a fee to have the order entered by the court, which will be about $10.00.  The fees and the procedures vary by state, and you can go to your state's website and type "name change" in the search bar to get more information.
