Do you have to pay monthly for all dvr's?

I want to purchase a DVR, but do you have to pay a monthly fee/subscription for all of them. All I see is the direct TV one's. Thanks to any/all anwers!

Pioneer and Toshiba used to make Tivos that came with Tivo Basic for free.  They don't make them anymore, but they are still available on ebay.  They don't do all the fancy things that premium Tivo does (season passes, etc.), but you can easily program them for single or repeat recordings.  I have one, and I love it.

Depends on your service provider. I have Time Warner Cable and I pay $6.95 per box to rent their DVR's

It depends on the service provider.   I use Dish Network and I know you don't pay a monthly fee for the DVR if you have all of the channels.
