  1. It didn't cost me anything!! I unschooled myself for 9-12 grade (which I completed in 2 years) with just the resources at the library.  Do look into the laws for your state though.

  2. You don't have to buy the right to be homeschooled. Sometimes people pay for classes or the materials for a course of study ( known as 'curriculum'). Laws vary by state, and policies by school district. Your choices will also be influenced by what kind of education you want. Just as some schools are arts-focused, some are science based, some are vocational, and some are college-prep, homeschool programs meet different needs for different people. The link to state laws from HSLDA will probably be a good start, but you'll want to contact homeschoolers in your area. There are extensive networks of support and activities, some with religious base and some without, so that you can meet other homeschoolers for social activities and classes, if that interests you.

    Good luck.

  3. In my state all you have to do is be the parent. I home school my 4th, 3rd and 1st graders and I do not pay anything. The only things I have to pay for is the once a year test which is required to be issued by a licensed teacher. I also have to pay for anything I use to teach my kids with.

  4. It depends on what state you are from. I know in Utah the parent of a child but sign a waiver stating which subjects they intend to teach their child, for how long, etc... Go to the main office or website for your school district and see what their rules are. In High School in order to earn high school credit you have to receive the course from an accredited source... for example, in Utah they have an Electronic High School where you take classes online and earn credit for them as well. They offer most high school classes and it's also a great way to get more credits if you're missing them. It takes discipline and a lot of hard work but is very doable. BYU also offers Independent Study courses to high school students but these cost about 100 dollars each whereas the Electronic High School is free.
