Do you have to pay to use TiVo?

Just wondering, in Canada we dont have TiVo. So if I bought one off of Ebay, would it work? Or am I better off getting a Hard Drive recorder to record my shows?

To use the Tivo service you have to pay for it. You can connect via the internet for the downloads etc.
