Do you have to play the PS1 games "Persona" and Persona 2" to understand the story of Shin Megami Persona 3 ?

From what I've read I don't think so.

Fear not my Shin Megami friend you need no experience of the Persona's to understand it. Think of Shin Megami games like Final Fantasy Games. they all have the same monsters (with a few new each game) and the monsters all have the same 'type' (like Devil, Justice ets), there is also the same type of magic and attack between all SMT games. the sotries are always different but sense a sort of demons and post/pre apocolypse stance. there's no fluffy bunnies curtainly and most are 15+ Persona 3 has been given a 12+ but i think that's weak, Persona 3 is a game where you summon your demon by shooting yourself in the head beware of letting little kids play it but i think it's up to disgresion.

Anyway Persona 3 is AMAZING and a happy edition to the SMT range, enjoy with confidense!
