Do you have to put water in 4wheelers?

My landlord is out of town and he said I could use his ATV, I was riding down the road and it started slowing down on it's on. I let off the throttle for a few seconds and resumed riding... It did fine after that. Is it over heating? How does a 4wheeler keep cool?

I would guess most ATV are air cooled, it'll have a radiator if it's water cooled, take a look.
