Do you have to register cats in Australia, Queensland?

My neighbour has recently moved and left one of their cats behind. We have no way of contacting them about it and even if we could we wouldn't as they were not overly nice people. The cat, a small neutered female domestic short hair, is approximately 7-8 years old and gets along very well with our 18 month old neutered male cat.We have managed to get her to sleep inside every night, eat inside and she spends much of her time following us around for "the loves". We strongly suspect that she has never been given affection before as she was wary for a good month or so before we could pat her. Now she is obsessed with pats and cuddles and loves being picked up.

But that's off topic. What I want to know is, we've told the vet to send us notices for her injections and what not and that if she is effectively living with us. Do we need to register her? We have no idea if she has any papers although knowing the family who had her, I would say not. Her mother and one of her sons were adopted a few years ago by another neighbour and frequently beat her up so there is no chance of a family reunion, and I am fairly sure Ash (her mother) was not registered. What should I do?

  1. Hi there... being here in the USA, the laws in QLD or in AU in general are significantly different...perhaps it maybe helpful to contact your veterinarian or local animal control agency and most likely they would be able to help you to determine if she needs to be registered.  If this is a pedigree cat you are referencing to, you would need her breeder's contact info to register her.
