Do you have to send in for a social security card and then make an appointment to pick it up or can you just?

go down to the office and pick one up. Can they send you one by mail?

It will come in the mail when it is issued.

You have to go into your local Social Security office and fill out an application.

They should be able to send it to you through the mail or you should be able to pick one up at the office with a little wait especially if you already know your SS number.  I would make sure to have enough documentation to proof who you are.
