When we meet new people, we often shake hands as we tell them our names. In this case, is shaking hands something always expected to do? Is it considered as rude or not friendly if we don't shake hands?

What are your thoughts?

  1. If it's really casual, I don't.  Like friends with friends, I never shake anyone's hand.  It seems formal and unnecessary.

But if it's not casual, you should shake hands.  It's just the expected etiquette.

  2. In non-business settings, then it depends.  A complete lack of contact may be considered unfriendly, because you're unwilling to breach that barrier that associates you with each other.

I know that I can come across as anti-social because I don't like people touching me in general and I'll usually just give a small salute or wave; however, I will shake a hand, or even hug give a small hug when meeting people.  It really depends on the company.

  3. It's the polite thing to do, but probably not necessary in informal situations.

  4. If someone offers their hand, then you certainly should shake it.  It would be rude not to.  Otherwise it just depends on the situation.  Most business meetings involve shaking hands.

  5. i usually do, it is polite

  6. for the most part, i don't shake hands.
